Dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of technical communication, the Society for Technical Communication (STC) is the largest organization of its kind with over 25,000 members worldwide. There are eight regions, with approximately 20 chapters in each. Kansas City is in Region 6, which includes chapters in the states of Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois (Quad Cities only), Wisconsin, North Dakota, and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Region 6 also includes India.
In the Kansas City area, over 140 members work in such diverse fields as technical writing and editing, graphics, multimedia, Web development, and management. The local chapter has monthly programs that explore different areas of the technical communications field. Past topics have included Information Mapping, usability, and creating a portfolio. These programs provide endless networking opportunities as well as a valuable way to enhance skills and stay up-to-date with industry trends. Members and non-members are welcome to attend.

When you do renew, consider joining a Special Interest Group (SIG). SIGs provide a forum for discussing more specialized topics. They are valuable tools for anyone who has found their niche (or, is looking for one) in the industry.
